First initial gathering: As a starting point I focused on a selection of Massive Attacks album covers and set designs. With the hope of deciphering any consistent themes throughout their portrayals.
As you can see, a large proportion of these designs are black and white. This gives their designs a very striking and bold appearance which has been carried through to their coloured artwork. Although their artwork isn't always executed to the best quality, it's what it signifies that shouts the loudest. Their designs are based blatantly on communication and meaning rather than aesthetic appeal.
Abstract artworks
If I were to see this design on its own with no relation to Massive Attack, I'd disregard it and perceive it as an awful piece of design, However! through Massive Attacks consistent use of mixed media and unwritten dialogue, it becomes interesting and creates the challenge of working out what each part means. This is a point I need to expand on when it comes to choosing my design route...
