OUGD 603 - Brief writing/ selection

The minimum amount of briefs we had to produce was 8, my aim is to produce 10 or more. With the intentions to chose briefs that would push my abilities and take advantage of the colleges resources.

I want to complete 2 or 3 competition briefs. From either / or : YCN Student Awards, D&AD New Blood Awards, RSA & ISTD.

I'd like to undertake 2 live briefs (set by visiting professionals)

Undergo 2 or 3 collaborations

And complete a set of briefs that will strengthen my abilities as a designer and create a strong CONCEPTUAL portfolio. It's all well and good being able to design things that look good, but it's more about the idea of something than its aesthetics (which can be refined).

Points to remember!

Consider the range of briefs that you are planning to undertake, they should have different time scales, production values and skill sets…

Who is your intended audience?

Is there a skill set you wish to develop?

How are you challenging yourself and what do you need to learn?

You are required to enter one competition brief.
You are required to work on one collaborative brief.
You are required to work on one live brief.

Brief writing…

As a starting point I wrote up a range of various briefs that suited my intentions, and would compliment my design abilities. As well as including briefs that would challenge particular skills, for e.g. Web design. Each brief had varying time scales and differed in their ranges of outcomes and applications. I made sure I included some short and sweet briefs that I could do alongside some of the larger briefs, this way my design ideas would be constantly circulating as oppose to turning stagnant.

The main concentration in the selection of briefs this year, was my portfolio. I regarded this year as my key opportunity to develop a portfolio that would adhere to my direction as a designer...
